Craigmore Sustainables is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of two of our team members at the 2025 Gisborne Young Grower of the Year competition.

Rhiannon Morrell, a member of our apples team, was awarded first place, while Larissa Wooding-Ngata secured a commendable third place – a remarkable double podium finish that reflects the calibre of talent within our business.

Rhiannon MorrellCompeted alongside six other talented young horticulturists on 18 July, the duo showcased their skills, knowledge, and passion for the industry. Rhiannon’s win secures her a place at the national Young Grower of the Year final in Christchurch this September, where she will represent Gisborne against six other regional champions.

Originally from Gisborne, Rhiannon began her horticulture journey with LeaderBrand, working in vegetable production before discovering her passion for apples. At Craigmore, she plays a key role in data collection and analysis to support informed decision-making in orchard management.

“I love the technical side of horticulture, there’s always something new to learn,” says Rhiannon. “Craigmore has supported my growth every step of the way, including encouraging me to enter this competition.”

Rhiannon is currently studying towards her Level 4 Certificate in Fruit Production through Primary ITO, having already completed Levels 2 and 3. She credits the competition with helping her step outside her comfort zone and hopes it inspires more young people to explore the diverse opportunities in horticulture. Her long-term goal is to advance into technical management in pipfruit.

Craigmore also acknowledges Gisborne orchard manager, Joshua Rowe, who led the delivery of this year’s Gisborne Young Grower of the Year competition. His leadership and commitment were instrumental in the success of the event, and in championing the emerging talent in his team.

Competitions like these thrive on the collective energy, collaboration, and dedication of industry professionals who continue to elevate and inspire the next generation of horticultural talent.
