Mahana Eco Fur has two unique ranges featuring products produced from Brushtail Possum Fur pelts, from Kapua-Merino wool knit fabric or from a blend of both. All items are hand made in NZ to stringent quality standards.
The Fashion story is based around two classic fur coats, one swing and the other a long slim coat and a selection of very desirable fur and Kapua-Merino accessories. The beautiful fur edged Kapua-Merino wool wraps are favorites worldwide. The range is contemporary and designed in New Zealand.
The Homewares story is in essence a collection of beautiful fur throws with a compliment of accessories, such as a fur pillow or a Kapua-Merino leather bound sofa blanket. This range is sold to the six top US design houses thorough a partnership of two New York women. It is also sold in Italy and France
An Armenian furrier, visiting Craigmore has compared Brushtail Possum Fur to costly sable in texture and quality. The Maori name "Mahana" meaning warm was chosen as possum fur is both extraordinarily warm and light.

So far defeating the best efforts of conservation authorities, the introduced and prolific Brushtail Possum is increasing in numbers and is steadily eating their way through the New Zealand bush and forest. The vision of Sir Peter and Fiona was to create market demand for the possum furs and so assist in the great battle waged in NZ against the Possum as an ecological pest.
Fiona has a wonderful farm station about 30 minutes inland from Timaru in the South Island of NZ. Craigmore is a particularly beautiful property tucked into the long evening shadow of the Southern Alps. It is found at Maungati, which is Maori for "Mountain of the Cabbage Trees". High on the Maungati hills are a series of rock caves that are the sites for a series of ancient Maori rock drawings. These places now protected by the Queen Elizabeth II trust covenants area are a unique toanga and treasure of NZ. Looking west to Aoraki Mt Cook in the sheltered Valley of the Moa there is a significant shelter with drawings of three Moa; the magnificent flightless bird which formerly flourished on the NZ tussock grasslands.
Fiona has declared that the work towards obtaining organic certification for the whole of Craigmore station will continue. This is a visionary step forward.

To realise the ecological vision to control the possum damage Sir Peter established a business called Wild Peter Products Ltd that procures possum fibre and sells this fibre to be spun into a high quality cloth. This is an exclusive fibre with exceptional properties of warmth, softness and natural quality. Wild Peter Products have branded this fibre as Kapua. Kapua has a Maori meaning "light-as-a-cloud". A very soft, light and warm knit blend can be made with 40% Kapua and 60% Merino wool.
To contribute and provide support to this ecological aim, Fiona began Mahana Eco Fur. She recognised that the exceptional beauty, warmth and light weight of the fur presented an opportunity to establish a range of luxury fur fashions and homewares.
Underlining the Mahana Eco Fur drive to produce a top quality and world-class
luxury range is the desire to assist in the control of the possum pest and
help save the NZ forests. A portion of the profits from Mahana Eco Fur are
dedicated to the Craigmore Conservation Trust to assist in preserving and
protecting the ancient Maori cave drawings at Craigmore Station.
